The Importance of Female Self-Defense in Kernersville: Confidence, Awareness, and Real Protection

As a father of two young daughters, it has become more clear to me than ever before how critical it is that women know how to defend themselves.

I’ve been involved in martial arts since I was 8 years old. At first, it gave me an outlet for energy and aggression in a healthy, structured way. I thrived in an environment that demanded excellence, but also built respect, discipline, and control. Martial arts didn’t just teach me how to fight—it helped shape who I became.

For a long time, teaching martial arts was just a job.

Until it wasn’t.

One day, I read a story about a young woman not far from here in North Carolina. She had recently broken up with her boyfriend. Later, he broke into her room, pushed her against a wall, and strangled her to death.

What shook me to my core was this:

The day before, we had practiced that exact situation in class—being pinned against a wall and choked.

That moment changed everything for me.

It made me realize the urgency of what we teach. Self-defense is not a guarantee. It doesn’t make someone invincible. But it gives people a chance—a real chance—to survive the worst situations humanity can offer.

From that day forward, my passion for self-defense, especially female self-defense, has driven everything we do here in Kernersville at Edge Fitness & Combat Arts.

The Reality: Why Female Self-Defense Matters

The statistics are sobering, and they highlight why this matters not just nationally, but right here in our own communities:

  • 1 in 3 women in the United States will experience physical violence in their lifetime
  • 1 in 5 women will experience attempted or completed sexual assault
  • Over 80% of assaults are committed by someone the victim knows
  • Nearly 50% of female homicide victims are killed by a current or former intimate partner

These aren’t just numbers.

These are real people—neighbors, daughters, mothers, and friends.

And while we can’t control the actions of others, we can be better prepared.

What Is the Best Form of Female Self-Defense?

This might surprise you…

The best form of self-defense is the one you will actually commit to.

If you can train one to two nights a week at a gym in Kernersville or nearby, do it:

  • Krav Maga
  • Muay Thai
  • Boxing
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

All of these are incredibly effective when trained consistently.

But if that level of commitment isn’t realistic right now, that’s okay too.

Seminars, workshops, and local self-defense classes—even once a month—can still make a huge difference.

Because here’s the truth most people don’t talk about:

You don’t rise to the occasion in a dangerous situation.
You fall to the level of your training.

The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s exposure, repetition, and building instinct.

Why Training With Experienced Instructors Matters

This is something I don’t take lightly.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to teach literally thousands of men and women self-defense. I’ve also competed in over 80 professional and amateur fights, and I bring nearly 30 years of martial arts experience across multiple disciplines including:

  • Krav Maga
  • Boxing
  • Kickboxing
  • MMA
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
  • Sambo
  • And more

But this isn’t just about me.

At Edge Fitness & Combat Arts here in Kernersville, our coaching team—including Jon Phipps, Greg Moye, Alex Rice, and Izzi Tufte—brings together:

  • 150+ years of combined teaching experience
  • Nearly two dozen black belts
  • Hundreds of self-defense seminars taught

We’ve spent decades not just learning—but teaching people how to apply these skills under pressure.

I say this for one reason:

So you know that when you step into our gym, you’re not guessing.
You’re learning from people who have lived it.

And more importantly—we can help give you the confidence and ability to defend yourself and your family.

The Most Important Self-Defense Principles

Over the years, I’ve learned that effective self-defense doesn’t need to be complicated.

In fact, the simpler it is—the better it works.

Keep It Simple and Repeatable

For this reason, when we run seminars, we keep things simple and repeatable.

You don’t rise to the occasion in a dangerous situation.
You fall to the level of your training.

So instead of overwhelming people with dozens of techniques, we focus on a few that actually stick.

Our goal is to make sure every woman leaves with:

  • Three attacks she can use from nearly any position
  • Clear, practical rules to help her navigate and survive dangerous situations

We focus on techniques that are simple, effective, and easy to practice:

  • Knee strikes
  • Groin kicks
  • Elbows

These aren’t flashy.
They’re reliable.

Because in a real situation, you won’t have time to think—you’ll react based on what you’ve practiced.

Be Careful Who You Learn From

This is important—and it needs to be said clearly.

Women should be cautious of trainers or gyms that promise:

  • “The easiest way to defend yourself”
  • “Foolproof techniques”
  • “Guaranteed ways to win every fight”

That kind of language is a red flag.

Because it’s not true.

Fighting is messy.
It’s unpredictable.
It’s dangerous.

Mistakes happen—no matter how much training you have.
And sometimes, it only takes one mistake to completely change the outcome of a situation.

The best gyms and the best instructors won’t sell you a fantasy.

They will:

  • Give you solid, proven tools
  • Train your instincts under pressure
  • Build your awareness
  • Help you develop the mindset to act when it matters most

But they will also be honest:

There is no perfect self-defense system.

Because people aren’t perfect.

And real-world situations don’t happen when you’re ready.

They happen:

  • When your guard is down
  • From the side
  • From behind
  • In places you don’t expect
  • And sometimes… from people you trust

That’s why awareness is so critical.

Because the earlier you recognize danger,
the better your chances of avoiding—or surviving—it.

1. Focus on Simple, Effective Strikes

You don’t need flashy techniques. You need reliable ones.

The same ones we drill over and over:

  • Groin strikes
  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Eye attacks

These are accessible from almost any position and can create the opportunity you need to escape.

Because that’s the goal:

Not to win a fight—
but to survive and get away.

2. Awareness Is Everything

The best self-defense situation is the one you avoid entirely.

That means:

  • Staying off your phone in parking lots
  • Keeping your head up and scanning your surroundings
  • Sitting where you can see entrances and exits
  • Having your keys ready before you get to your car

We also spend time teaching how to:

  • Stay alert and focused
  • Recognize danger early
  • Avoid and prevent situations before they escalate

In a busy area like Kernersville—or anywhere—you can avoid a lot of danger just by being aware.

Most threats look for easy targets.

Confidence and awareness alone can make you a much harder one.

3. Be Assertive and Set Boundaries

A large number of assaults come from people you know.

You have every right to:

  • Set clear boundaries
  • Say no without apology
  • Enforce those boundaries if they are crossed

No one has the right to touch you without your permission.

And if they do—you are allowed to defend yourself.

Confidence Changes Everything

Self-defense isn’t just about fighting.

It’s about confidence.

It’s about:

  • How you walk into a room
  • How you carry yourself in public
  • How you respond when something feels off

When you know you can protect yourself, the world feels different.

And for women in Kernersville and surrounding areas—especially those coming out of difficult or traumatic situations—this can be life-changing.

You don’t rebuild that overnight.

You build it:

  • One class
  • One rep
  • One strike at a time

The Biggest Mistake Most People Make

Let me say something that might be a little blunt:

Most people wait until something happens…
before they decide to prepare.

They think:

  • “It won’t happen to me”
  • “I’ll figure it out if I need to”
  • “I’ll start later”

But later is often too late.

The time to prepare is now—when things are calm, controlled, and safe.

So that if something ever does happen…
you’re not trying to figure it out in the moment.

You already know what to do.

Final Thoughts

I mentioned earlier that I have two daughters.

One of them is nearly 18 now.

I see how people look at her.
I see how some people treat her.

And while that reality will always exist…

There is a level of peace that comes from knowing she can protect herself—and handle herself if she ever needs to.

That’s what this is about.

Giving women in Kernersville—and everywhere—the ability to:

  • Walk with confidence
  • Set boundaries
  • Protect themselves

And if necessary…

Fight back.

You can build that.

One punch.
One knee.
One elbow at a time.
